The Boat
Lady K is a 1980 Hughes 35. Previous to Hughes Boatworks building the 35, it was known as the Northstar 1500. She is a Sparkman and Stephens design sloop rigged IOR boat. She is well mannered and races very well generally cruising at 6-7 knots in a decent breeze.
We bought “K” in June of 2016 and she was in sad shape. She had been put in the water every year but the previous owner’s wife was in declining health so she sat rubbing the dock collecting dust for a few years.
The previous owner finally decided to let her go and we quickly snatched her up.
The most notable feature when we were deciding to buy her was a repower that was done ten years earlier. She was repowered with a brand new Volvo MD2030 diesel/120s saildrive that purrs like a kitten.
Outside of the repower, she has refrigeration and pressure water and she has a shower in the head but the hot water system was removed a few years back so it’s cold showers for now. We aren’t thrilled and intend to fix this problem soon.
She carries a jib around 140% and a newer Dacron main we recently bought from another member at our yacht club. We’ve installed a stereo with outdoor marine speakers, an ST4000+ autopilot, a small Garmin GPS, and a ton of USB ports. She still has some soft spots in her deck and we want to install a composting head.
